What is Terraria?

You probably have some idea of what Terraria is and how awesome this game is, hence why you’re on this page trying to get Terraria for Mac. However, if you’re not super familiar with the game I’ll outline some of the best things about the game and why you should make sure to keep it in your daily gaming lineup. You’re not alone in liking Terraria, there have been over 12 million copies sold to date!

Terraria is an action and creation based sandbox game. If you’re unfamiliar with a sandbox game, it is basically a game that doesn’t limit the player in where and when they are able to get to certain areas of the game. Some games sequentially lead the player through a number of different levels that are predefined by the software developer. You beat the game, hence, when you reach the last level and complete all missions. Terraria is a bit different in that you are open to the entire world up front and are encouraged to explore and branch out to experience the whole world.

You’ll notice that you start the game off with a few different items that will help you get resources and get a footing within the game. You will have a pickaxe if you want to go mining and collect resources and explore caves. You will also be given a sword in case you encounter any enemies and you need to defend yourself. Finally, you’ll be given an axe so that you can chop down trees for wood to use in building.

You encounter several bosses throughout the game that you need to defeat to continue to play. You may also find that some of the bosses will try to destroy your base and you will have to defend yourself from them. It’s an incredibly addicting game that becomes second nature after playing several times and you’ll keep coming back for more and more as you build your base and your characters.

Is There Terraria For Mac?

This is a tricky question as there are two answers. Terraria currently doesn’t have a stand alone version for Mac, but they are in active development of a version that would be compatible with any Mac. The latest news is from a year ago they were still working on a Mac version but who knows when it will actually come out and no one really wants to wait around for months or years to play Terraria.

Luckily for you, there are options that are immediately available and will allow you to play Terraria on your Mac in less than 10 minutes! The basis of this is to download an Android emulator that will trick the Terraria app into thinking it’s being run on Android but it is actually on your Mac instead. Pretty sneaky right? I’ve done thorough testing and found that it works extremely well and I didn’t notice any glitches or bugs in the emulator.

We can all hope that the developers of Terraria will realize the market that they’re missing out on and create an Apple version soon but until that time we can move forward with this option as the second best option. As with most technology, we’ll see it become more and more interconnected as time goes on and we won’t have to rely on different systems that don’t talk to one another and share capabilities with one another.

How To Get Terraria For Mac

I’ll walk you through step by step how to download the android emulator, get everything installed and your profile set up, then we can download Terraria and get your previous game linked up so that you don’t miss out on all the time you spent working on your previous game. No one wants to loose all the hard work they put in just because they’re switching to a different platform.

Keep in mind that you will need to sign up for a Google Play account if you don’t already have one. The reason is because you’ll need to sync your Google Play account with the emulator so that you can actually download the app and get started playing. As of now, there is no iOS emulator that works all that well so we’re stuck with using an android emulator. Basically the gameplay and everything is the same, but a different platform. Depending on what platform you’ve played on in the past, you may notice slight changes but everything should be largely the same.

Now, let’s get into the step by step guide to get Terraria for Mac so that you can start playing! Keep in mind that the steps below will work on any Mac that you may own, from Macbook Pro, to Macbook Air, iMac, and Mac Pro.

Step 1: You will need to make sure you’ve setup your Google Play account and have your login information to use after downloading the emulator.

Step 2: At this point, you will need to download an android emulator. I find that Andyroid is the best one out there, with hardly any issues and just seems to work seamlessly on a Mac. You can try other emulators but my suggestion is to start with Andy and if you find issues with compatibility, then at that point you should try BlueStacks or Manymo.

Step 3: Now that you’ve downloaded Andyroid and have it in your downloads folder, double click it to go through the installation steps.

Step 4: You’ll be asked to sign in with your Google Play account so that you can sync your account. This is essential and makes the whole process so much easier, especially if you setup the 1 click sync. This syncs your Google Play account with Andyroid and will download all of your apps onto your profile without going to find them individually. If you’re new to Google Play you of course won’t already have the apps and you should follow the steps below to download Terraria separately.

Step 5: After launching Andyroid you will notice the home screen looks like a fresh install of Android. At the bottom right there will be a little shopping bag with the Google Play icon on it. Double click it to open the App store.

Step 6: Search for Terraria in the search bar at the top right and when the game shows up, click the buy/install button. Note, if you previously purchased Terraria on a different device, say your iPhone, PC, etc. you will need to pay $4.99 again to download the app onto your Android account. You may be able to ask Terraria via email or contact form if they will grant you access to the Mac version if you’ve already bought a different version.

Step 7: Now that you’ve installed Terraria for Mac, you will be able to play it using your emulator all you want.

Transfer Previous Game To Terraria On Mac

There are a couple of different options if you want to transfer a previous game to your new Mac version of Terraria. It depends if your old game is on a PC, iPhone, Android, etc. If your old game is on an android device then it’s pretty simple that it will automatically sync as the emulator is basically the same platform as the old game and it should be backed up in the Terraria server cloud. However, it will take a bit more work if your previous game was on a PC or an iPhone.

If your previous game was on a PC, you should be able to back up your game to the Steam server. This should mean all of your character info and all of your resources, etc. will be on the server. Hence, when you sign in to your Steam account you can transfer the game over to your emulator.

If your previous game was on an iPhone or iPad its a bit more difficult. You will want to plug in your iPhone or iPad to your computer and search through your device using DiskAid. Then, head into your App > Terraria folder and copy the entire app folder onto your computer. At that point you have all of the data you will need to transfer over to your emulator. Copy over your player files which have a .player extension over to your Andyroid version of the game. You will also want to transfer over your .world files and your config.dat file. All of these files should restore your characters and world that you worked hard on creating on a previous device.

Let us know if you have any comments or if you know of any other good tricks to transfer over your game easier. Hopefully in the future once there is a Terraria for Mac version, it will seamlessly transfer over and you won’t need to go about it by manually transferring files.

Please share this article on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest so that everyone else can play this awesome game on their Mac and help us push the game developers to hopefully release Terraria to use on a Mac as soon as possible!
